The cutoff is the date by which a child must turn 5 for kindergarten in many districts — September 1 is the most common, and the default here. Your district may use a different date; change it to match.
How the school age calculator works
How school entry ages work
Most districts use one rule: a child who has turned 5 by the cutoff date starts kindergarten that autumn; a child who is 6 by the cutoff typically starts Grade 1. A child who turns 5 after the cutoff waits for the next school year, when they comfortably meet the rule.
Why this page says 'likely'
Cutoff dates, early-entry waivers, and placement assessments are set by each district and school, and they genuinely differ — sometimes between neighbouring towns. This calculator applies the common rule to the dates you give it so you can plan; the district's own answer is the one that counts. Nothing about your child is recorded: the dates are used on this device, for this calculation, and nowhere else.
Worked example
Born June 15, 2021, cutoff September 1, 2026: the child is 5 years, 2 months on the cutoff — old enough for kindergarten in fall 2026 under the usual rule. A child born October 1, 2021 would be 4 years 11 months on the same cutoff and would start in fall 2027 instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is a school cutoff date?
It is the date by which a child must have turned a certain age — usually 5 for kindergarten — to start in that school year. September 1 is the most common cutoff in the US, but states and districts use dates from mid-July to mid-October, and some use December or January.
My child misses the cutoff by a few days. What usually happens?
In most districts the child starts the following year. Some districts allow early-entry testing or waivers for children born just after the cutoff, and private schools often set their own rules — it is always worth asking the specific school.
How is the age on the cutoff calculated?
Exactly like an age on any date: full years from the birth date to the cutoff, then full months, then days. A child born June 15, 2021 is 5 years and 2 months old on September 1, 2026.
Does this tool use my child's information anywhere?
No. The dates you type are processed in this browser tab only. EduKit keeps no records of children, students, or anyone else — by design, there is nothing here that could be stored or shared.
Is being the youngest in class a disadvantage?
Research is mixed and the effect is small either way; readiness varies far more between individual children than between birth months. Teachers consistently say confidence, language, and independence matter more than a few months of age.
